Scotland

I spent a few days in Scotland recently which felt like a home-coming (I lived in Edinburgh for a year or so in the early ’90s). Unlike my time then, on this visit, it hardly rained at all. Below are some sketches from my short stay. The Calton Hill view of Edinburgh is a classic shot, a bit like the Eiffel Tower in Paris or Big Ben in London.

In Edinburgh, the Scottish National Gallery and the Scottish  National Portrait Gallery are very much worth a visit. Both have a good number of excellent oils by Sir Henry Raeburn (in my opinion, Scotland’s greatest portrait painter) and a lot more masterpieces by other artists besides. You can easily visit both museums in a day as they are not indigestibly big and about fifteen minutes walk from each other.
