Here are a few paintings of the sea in Jamaica. Painting waves is not easy – they are all different and they never sit still. On a blustery day like in these sketches, you have to deal with the wind, the spray, the changing cloud formations and the light as the sun pops in and out from behind the clouds, lighting up the shallows or plunging them into darkness. The way to cope is to decide what are the best effects and try to capture them. There is a lot of fast memory work. The great thing is that it can make for a lively painting.
